Sydney records its first deadly shark incident since 2022; authorities close Northern Beaches amid investigation
The victim, identified as Mercury Psillakis, an experienced surfer and father, was struck while surfing with friends around 100 meters offshore shortly after 10 a.m. local time.
Fellow surfers rushed him back to shore, but despite immediate efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that Psillakis sustained catastrophic injuries, including severe limb loss consistent with a large shark encounter.
NSW Police have recovered two pieces of his surfboard for forensic examination.
Species Investigation
Preliminary analysis by marine biologists indicates a great white shark, possibly up to 12 feet long, was responsible. Officials stressed that the investigation into the exact species is still ongoing. Northern Beaches Council and Surf Life Saving NSW indicated temporary suspensions of water activities.
