Lee Kuan Yew: The Architect of Modern Singapore

Life and Family
Lee Kuan Yew, whose full name was Harry Lee Kuan Yew, was born on Kampong Java Road in Singapore. His father was Lee Chin Koon, and his mother was Chua Jim Neo. He came from a Peranakan Chinese family, with his great-grandfather having migrated from China to Singapore in the 1860s. This rich cultural heritage greatly influenced his worldview and values.
Education
Lee was exceptionally bright from a young age. He attended Telok Kurau English School for his primary education and later studied at the prestigious Raffles Institution. In 1940, he topped the Senior Cambridge exams. However, his education was disrupted by World War II and the Japanese occupation of Singapore.
After the war, he went to the United Kingdom for higher studies. He initially enrolled at the London School of Economics and later joined Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. In 1949, he graduated with first-class honours in Law and went on to become a barrister.
Political Journey
Upon returning to Singapore in 1950, Lee, along with his wife Kwa Geok Choo, started the law firm Lee & Lee. However, his true interest lay in politics. In 1954, he founded the People’s Action Party (PAP) and soon became a prominent political figure.On 5th June 1959, at the age of 35, Lee Kuan Yew became Singapore’s first Prime Minister. He held this position for 31 years. Under his leadership, Singapore underwent a remarkable transformation—from a poor, resource-scarce country to a wealthy and efficient economy. During his tenure, Singapore’s per capita income grew from around US$400 to over US$12,000.

Even after stepping down as Prime Minister in 1990, Lee continued to serve the nation as a Senior Minister and later as Minister Mentor. He passed away on 23rd March 2015. His death was deeply mourned across Singapore, and the nation paid him heartfelt tributes.Known as the ‘Architect of Modern Singapore’, Lee Kuan Yew’s contributions remain unparalleled.
