Nepal Social Media Ban Sparks Debate Amid Growing Protests

Kathmandu — The Government of Nepal has ordered a temporary shutdown of YouTube and Facebook, citing escalating political protests across major cities including Kathmndu, Pokhara, and Biratnagar. Officials described the action as a security measure aimed at curbing “uncontrolled digital mobilization.

According to reports, demonstrators had used social media platforms to organize rallies, share political demands, and livestream protes gatherings. Authorities said the platforms were being exploited to spread unrest and mobilize people against government policies.

Crackdown Extends Beyond Platforms

The Ministry of Communication directed internet providers to suspend access to the two platforms nationwide. Schols, colleges, and hostels—where social media usage is high—were specifically targeted for monitoring.Security forces have also been deployed in protest-prone areas, and law enforcement officials said further restrictions could follow if demonstrations intensify. Many Nepali citizens expressed frustration, noting that YouTube and Facebook are not only social platforms but also vital sources of income, education, and communication. Students and small creators argued that the sudden blackout disrupted online learning and business activities.Civil rights groups criticized the ban as excessive. “The government should address grievances through dialogue, not digital censorship,” said one Kathmandu-based activist.

Government’s Defense

Authorities defended the move, calling it a “temporary necessity.” They argued that unchecked online mobilization could escalate into larger unrest and threaten stability. Officials suggested the restrctions would be lifted once the situation normalizes.
